In 2015 Recording King discontinued the RK R80.
The Recording King RK36 is basically the same banjo without the extra design that replicated the old Gibson Recording King Banjos of the 1930's.
The RK R36 uses the same tone ring, 3 ply rim, one piece flange, tuning pegs, tailpiece, all hardware and has the mahogany neck and resonator like the RK 80. The only difference was in inlay and peghead design.
The RK 80 model was the original Recording King 5-string banjo model. It's design and look is based on the old Gibson Recording King Models from the 1930's. It featured the white binding, ornate peghead and unique design.
The Recording King RK75-Elite and RK76-Elite also uses the same tone ring, 3 ply rim, one piece flange, tuning pegs, tailpiece, hardware with mahogany neck and resonator like the RK 80. The RK R75-Elite and RK R76-Elite have some other features the RK 36 or RK 80 do not have.

They have a perfect balance like the old Gibson hard shell banjo cases.The banjo fits in tight which is crucial for safety and there are padded wedges that keep the peg head from moving and perfectly protected. The RK-R80 Professional combines classic pre-war style features and desirable modern touches to create a great-sounding bluegrass banjo. The Professional features a mahogany resonator, mahogany neck, bound ebony fretboard, American Standard thread hardware, 20-hole tone ring and a 3-ply rim. The Professional features the traditional Recording King floral peghead and inlay and an authentic Mastertone-style flange.
