Gold Tone IT-250R - With Resonator - 17 Fret Irish Tenor Banjo

Gold Tone IT 250R with Resonator 17 Fret Irish Tenor Banjo

This is the same banjo as the Goldtone IT 250 but with an added resonator. It cost a bit more this way but if you think you would like a resonator is much cheaper to get it at the same time as when you buy the banjo. Ordering separately is more expensive plus shipping costs and having to install it.

The short scale tenor is designed for playing in the common keys of traditional music. Played by Jerry Cowan, a street musician from Dublin, Ireland. This is an excellent addition to any tenor player's arsenal of instruments.

The IT-250R is the best irish tenor for the money, designed for the tone sought after in Irish music. The banjo has excellent tone and volume.

IT 250 R

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful

Hi Ross,
I got this banjo a year and a half ago at Banjoteacher as my first jump into playing Irish Tenor. I grew up playing fiddle and mandolin, so it was a natural transition instrumetn. The IT 250 R is a really nice quality instrument, and I recommend getting it with the resonator. It sounds great, has a punchy and resonant tone, and is plenty loud. I think the white laydie tone ring also adds striking clarity.
The strings that came with the banjo were all wrong (for me) and I had to spend some time working through different strings until I found what I liked. Don't let the flabby strings that come stock with this banjo make you think it doesn't play well or sound good. It sounds great. I ended up liking Thomastik guitar strings (12,22,32,41) steel, bronze flat wound, and bronze round wound. These worked out better than all the other strings I tried. The ball end strings fit nicely in the slots on the tailpiece as well. You can get individual strings at several online places like juststrings.com.
The only thing I would prefer for this banjo would be for it to have a 21" scale like most of the old pre-war Vega short scale tenors. Nevertheless, it holds its own when playing with friends. I own several 1920's Vega banjos and this banjo seems to be equally well made. We'll have to see in a hundred years how it holds up.
